Who Changed the Sabbath to Sunday? – Golden Nuggets of Truth

vatican-popeIn Part 3, We Investigate Just Who Changed the Sabbath to Sunday – and Does Resting on Sunday REALLY Honor the Day of Jesus’ Resurrection?
The answer may SHOCK YOU…

What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world.
You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad…

We spend most of our time here at SD discussing topics related to Sound Money – physical gold and silver
As we continue this new series, we delve into a commodity that is more valuable than even gold and silver – Truth…

You shall know the Truth, and The Truth shall set you free…

Your law is better to me than thousands of gold and silver coins…

In Part 1, we examined the basics of Truth
– what, and Who the Truth is.

In Part 2, we performed an exegesis on God’s Law, and demonstrated conclusively that Scripture declares the Truth – God’s law – as unchanging:
Your Word is True from the beginning: and every one of your righteous laws endures FOREVER.  -Psalm 119:160

In Part 3, we will investigate just who changed the Sabbath to Sunday – and does resting on Sunday REALLY honor the day of Jesus’ resurrection?

Part 3: Who Changed the Sabbath to Sunday?

Nearly all Christians today observe Sunday as the Sabbath Day, typically described as “The Lord’s Day”.   The reason/explanation typically given is that observance of Sunday honors The Lord as the day of His resurrection.   An examination of Scripture as well as historical information reveals a different story entirely however…

The first time the Sabbath Day is mentioned in the Scripture is Genesis 2: 2 and 3, and we learn that the Creator Himself blessed the 7th day and set it apart (sanctified it) because on it He rested from all His work:
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

aleph-tav
Throughout the Scripture in the original Hebrew text, the symbol representing both Covenant and Jesus the Messiah is את – aleph tav – the first and last Hebrew letters.

The first Hebrew letter, Aleph א , means Authority or Strength.
The last Hebrew letter, Tav ת, means A Sign, or, A Mark

Combined, the Hebrew symbol Aleph Tav את , is the word/symbol for Jesus Himself, and carries the meaning of Sign of the Authority/Strength of the Covenant.

(as a side note, the Hebrew word for Truth – which we defined in Part 1 as both God’s Law, The Word, and Jesus the World Made Flash – is emet (Aleph Mem Tav), with Mem being the very middle letter in the Hebrew Aleph-Bet:

emet

Back to the Aleph Tav symbol, which represents both Covenant and Jesus Himself.

Beginning in Genesis 1:1, the text states that Elohim created all things through Jesus (את) – Aleph Tav, the First and the Last:

In the beginning בְּרֵאשִׁית  Elohim (אֱלֹהִים  (את  created….

In Revelation, Jesus appears to John and informs him that He is the את – the Aleph and the Tav – the first and the last  (alpha and the omega in Greek).

In Zechariah 12:10, the Scripture states that …they shall look upon Me את  whom they have pierced…

aleph-tav

We point this out because when the 4th Commandment is given on Mt. Sinai, the Scripture states to Remember the Sabbath אֶת day to keep it holy..

So quite literally, the Scripture states that the Sabbath is Jesus’ day (as He is the את ), and by using the את symbol, informs us that keeping the Sabbath is the sign that we are in covenant with Jesus and the Father Himself.

Furthermore, it is interesting to note that of all the commandments given (10 in the Ten Commandments and 613 in the entire law), God singled out the Sabbath Day as the one Law He told His people to Remember:

Remember the Sabbath את day, to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor and do all your work,  but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.  For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord (יהוה) blessed the Sabbath את  day and hallowed it. – Exodus 20:8-11

Notice that God informed His People that the Sabbath was His Own Holy Day, and that not only God’s people Israel, but even their animals and foreigners living among Israel were required to keep and observe His Sabbath Day.

According to God Himself, observance of the Sabbath Day is THE SIGN that His people follow Yahweh, the God of Creation, and He states it is a Permanent Covenant throughout all of Israel’s generations:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep,  for it is a sign (אוֹת) between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. 16 Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel FOREVER; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’”  – Exodus 31: 12-17

The 6th Hebrew letter vav וֹ represents man, as well as a nail that binds something together.  So quite literally, Exodus 31:13 informs us that the Sabbath is the covenant that binds man to the nailed hand of the את – Jesus the Messiah.

Exodus 31:16 clearly states that the Children of Israel must keep the Sabbath throughout all of their generations as a permanent covenant.

We suspect that most Christians in today’s Church Age do not equate themselves as part of Israel, and may therefore claim that the this “perpetual covenant” does not apply to them.

The Apostle Paul however informs us that all believers in Jesus as the Messiah have been grafted into the Olive Tree called Israel:

For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, 18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.
You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith.

Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.  Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.  And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? -Romans 11:16-24

Jeremiah 11:16 reveals God calls His people Israel an olive tree:
The Lord called your name,
Green Olive Tree, Lovely and of Good Fruit.

So if Scripture plainly states that the Creator’s Sabbath is a Permanent Covenant with His people, and urges His people to REMEMBER this law,
Who changed the Sabbath from the 7th day of the week to Sunday (1st day of the week)?

The Answer:  The Roman Catholic Church…and they very plainly state that the very fact that they have (in their own eyes) the power to change God’s laws proves that the Pope is God himself in the flesh:

vatican-pope

In the year 321, Roman Emperor Constantine, a pagan sun worshiper, legalized Christianity and attempted to merge it with sun worship by enacting the first civil law mandating a day of rest “on the venerable day of the sun”:

On the venerable day of the sun let the magistrate and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed. In the country however, persons engaged in agricultural work may freely and lawfully continue their pursuits; because it often happens that another day is not so suitable for grain growing or for vine planting; lest by neglecting the proper moment for such operations the bounty of heaven should be lost. —Schaff’s History of the Christian Church, vol. III, chap. 75.

Constantine’s Sunday law was officially confirmed by the Roman Papacy. The Council of Laodicea in A.D. 364 decreed, “Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday but shall work on that day; but the Lord’s day they shall especially honour, and, as being Christians, shall, if possible, do no work on that day. If, however, they are found Judaizing, they shall be shut out from Christ” (Strand, op. cit., citing Charles J. Hefele, A History of the Councils of the Church, 2 [Edinburgh, 1876] 316).

Cardinal Gibbons, in Faith of Our Fathers, 92nd ed., p. 89, confirms Catholicism took it upon itself to change God’s Sabbath:

“You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we [the Catholic Church] never sanctify.”

And the smoking gun admission: “The Catholic Church, … by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday” (The Catholic Mirror, official publication of James Cardinal Gibbons, Sept. 23, 1893).

“Protestants do not realize that by observing Sunday, they accept the authority of the spokesperson of the Church, the Pope” (Our Sunday Visitor, February 5, 1950).

Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change [Saturday Sabbath to Sunday] was her act… And the act is a mark of her ecclesiastical authority in religious things” (H.F. Thomas, Chancellor of Cardinal Gibbons).

Sunday is our mark of authority… the church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact” (Catholic Record of London, Ontario Sept 1, 1923).

Foretold by Prophecy:

The Prophet Daniel foretold that the head of the Catholic Church would not only wear out the saints of the Most High, but would think he had changed the Creator’s times and laws:
“And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws.  -Daniel 7:25

Was Jesus Resurrected on Sunday?

Most Protestants are undoubtedly shocked to learn this info, having been taught that obeying Our Creator’s Law is no longer necessary, due to the fact that Christians now observe Sunday as a day of rest rather than the Sabbath in honor of Jesus’ resurrection.

A close examination of Scripture however, reveals that the Messiah did not rise from the dead on Sunday however, but on the Sabbath Day.

Recall Jesus’ words that the ONLY sign that would be given proving that He was the Messiah was the Sign of Jonah: Jesus claimed He would lie in the heart of the earth for 3 Days AND 3 Nights:

An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.  Matthew 12: 39-40

The traditional belief is that Jesus died on a Friday, and rose again Sunday morning before dawn.  If this is true Jesus was NOT the Messiah because His Prophetic Sign was false.

Friday afternoon to Sunday morning before dawn is only 1.5 days.  Even using the Hebrew method of counting (inclusive) only comes out to 2 days and 2 nights:

Crucified on Friday afternoon =  Day 1.  Friday night to Saturday morning = Night 1.  Daylight Saturday = Day 2.  Saturday night = Night 2.

Even if Sunday morning is forcibly counted as Day 3 (Scripture is clear the women arrived at the tomb before dawn and Jesus was already risen from the dead), you simply cannot come up with a 3rd night for a Friday Crucifixion/ Sunday Resurrection timeline.

An examination of Scripture however reveals an entirely different timeline for the Resurrection of Jesus.

Now on the first [day] of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.  -John 20:1

Seems to clearly indicate Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday when read in English.

A simple tool called Strong’s Concordance immediately reveals however that Jesus rose from the dead early on the Sabbath Day, not Sunday.

The word day is in brackets (or italicized depending on version) in your English Bible because the translators ADDED the word to the text.  It does not appear in the original text.

The phrase translated into English as “day of the week” is Strongs #g4521, which happens to be the Greek word σάββατον or sabbaton.  Look it up for yourself.

According to Strong’s, the Greek word Sabbaton was Of Hebrew origin for the Hebrew word Shabbat – Sheen, Bet, Tav: שַׁבָּת (H7676)

  1. the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work

    1. the institution of the sabbath, the law for keeping holy every seventh day of the week

    2. a single sabbath, sabbath day

  2. seven days, a week

Thus the text literally reads:  “Now on the first Sabbath Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark…”

Strong’s G4521 σάββατον or sabbaton appears 68 times in the Greek concordance of the NT.  The word is translated into English as Sabbath EVERY TIME except for the gospel accounts of Jesus’ resurrection, in which it is translated as  [day] of the week:
Mark 16:2, Mark 16:9, Luke 24:1, John 20:1, and John 20:9 (referring to the same day).

So why was the Greek word for Sabbath (sabbaton) translated as [day] of the week?

Because the translators did not understand/comprehend what they were reading.  (Combined with their already ingrained belief/bias in a Friday death/ Sunday resurrection stemming from paganism.  Friday was the day of Dagon the Fish God of ancient Babylon, and Sunday was the day of the Babylonian Sun god.
You might find it interesting to see the headdress worn by the Priest of Dagon:

Dagon
pope
we digress.

The translators did not understand what they were reading in the Scripture.  If Jesus died and was buried just before the Sabbath began, lie dead in the grave for 3 days, how could He then rise from the dead early on the Sabbath Day?

A lack of understanding of the Scripture.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to me: because you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.  -Hosea 4:6

Jesus – the lamb slain from the foundation of the world – was crucified on Passover.   According to the law given in Leviticus, the day after the Passover Sacrifice is a High Sabbath – the 1st Day of Unleavened Bread:

These are the feasts of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the Lord’s Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord; seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it. But you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord for seven days.  Lev 23:4-8

Also, after the Passover and the First Day of Unleavened Bread Sabbath, God instructed His people to begin counting 7 Sabbaths to Pentecost:

‘And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. 16 Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the Lord.  -Lev 23:15-16

Only with a proper understanding of God’s Holy Days do the gospel accounts make sense.

Jesus died on a Wednesday afternoon: Day 1.  At sunset that evening, the High Sabbath of Unleavened Bread began: Night 1.  This is why they were rushing to bury Jesus before sunset.  Thursday was the High Sabbath Day: Day 2. Thursday Night: Night 2.  Friday = Day 3-  the women go and buy and prepare spices.  Friday night = Night 3.

Early on the morning on the first Sabbath of the count to Pentecost before sunrise the women go to the tomb, but the stone is rolled away, and Jesus is risen.

3 Days and 3 Nights.  The Sign of Jonah.

Jesus rose from the dead early on the first Sabbath day in the count to Pentecost according to the Greek text in all 4 Gospel accounts.
So if Jesus actually rose from the dead on the Sabbath Day – His own את sign of the covenant day – and NOT on Sunday, who are we REALLY honoring by observing Sunday IN PLACE OF the Perpetual Covenant Sabbath Day God Commanded?

Remember, Jesus’ own words in Matthew 5:17-18:
Do not think that I came to destroy the law, but rather to fulfill (to make full of meaning).
For verily I say unto you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or tittle shall pass away from the law, until ALL be fulfilled.

Has heaven and earth passed away in 2017?   If not, then NOTHING has changed from the law according to Jesus Christ Himself.

In John 14:21, Jesus claims that those who love Him KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS:

He that has My commandments and keeps them, he it is that loves Me: and he that loves Me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.

and that those who DO NOT keep His commandments, do not love Him:

He that loves Me not keeps not my sayings: and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s that sent Me.

In 1 John 2:3-4, the disciple whom Jesus loved explains we are a LIAR if we say we know Jesus, yet do not keep HIS את commandments:

This is how we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
He that says I know Him, and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

and continues in Chapter 5:2-3:

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep His commandments.
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous.

We will close with something interesting from the book of Revelation.

As he has throughout all of history, at the End of the Age (which is rapidly approaching), Who does Satan make war against?

Those who worship the Father in Spirit AND In Truth:

And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus ChristRevelation 12:17

At the end of the age, the ONLY people who do not take the Mark of the Beast are those who both keep God’s commandments, AND hold fast to their faith in Jesus:

Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.  – Revelation 14:12

In these last days, Jesus is calling His people OUT OF BABYLON – Out of SUN(day) worship – Out of Idolatry – and Back to the Worship of Yahweh – the One True Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues.  – Rev 18:4
Choose this day whom you will serve.
