Either the handshake was ignored, or it was an opportunity to remind everybody of the Russian Collusion. Here’s more…
Here’s a larger pic, and if it’s worth a thousand words, well, surely it would be a blackboard, Bart Simpson style, with the writing “I will not collude with Russia any more ” written over and over again:
CNN is quick to remind everybody that regardless of a lack of evidence, oh yeah, Russian collusion is real:
The possible interaction would come amid a series of investigations into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, an issue that has plagued the Trump administration for months. In a recent swirl of action, special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation issued his first indictments last week, bringing charges against former top Trump campaign aides Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, who have pleaded not guilty.
Trump has long denied any collusion between his campaign and Russian operatives during the 2016 election. But US intelligence agencies concluded in a report released earlier this year that Russia ordered an “influence campaign” to harm Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning the election.
Fox News is basically maintaining radio silence on the matter:
Reuters has something to say about “the handshake” in the most matter of fact, “cover it just because we have to” kind of way:
Trump and Putin smiled and stood next to each other for the traditional group photograph. Then they parted to sit at different parts of the table.
The White House said earlier that no formal meeting was planned because of scheduling conflicts on both sides, though it was possible they would bump into each other.
Bloomberg has gone Fox style and basically maintained radio silence on the matter:
Think of the significance of it. Imagine what would have happened in the markets if Bloomberg decided to run a feed through Bloomberg Terminal?
The HFT algos would not have known how to react to the news because the Russian Collusion narrative has been falling apart and fast after dominating the headlines all year.
So, oddly enough, the number 12 trending story on Bloomberg is in fact “anti-handshake”. Unpredictable market moves could have happened otherwise.
Finally, here’s the actual handshake in real time, via RT:
