  • How off the mark am I? Or am I?
    April 23, 2014 03:03 pm
  • I've been bitten by a number of women over the years, and I totally loved it, but those are stories for a different kind of forum.    Those deer flies and horse flies that they have in Colorado are almost as bad as the flies you complain about.  Is there any sort of preventative you can use, or treatment for when nasty insects do get you?

  • @Mary B , years ago I spent a week with a friend paddling around lakes in Northern Minnesota's  Boundary Waters.  Yes I remember the mosquitoes & blackflies, and the fishing SUCKED.  But such a beautiful place!   Imagine my surprise when a number of years afterwards I found myself in an area of Russia ~300 from Moscow, in a place that looked almost exactly the same - complete with white birches, mosquitoes and blackflies!  Had a great time though; life is more about collecting experiences than accumulating 'toys.'   (Note:  Round, shiny objects are NOT considered toys.)

  • I don't think doc would complain to much about a few private deals carried on here. If he did he would post rules saying NO SALES

  • Black flies have been far worse than the mosquitoes... they leave oozing welts, even blood running down your legs/arms. Not many lakes down here on the prairie and they are over run with the same ski crowd.  Minnesota River has decent fishing for walleye and big flathead catfish though.

  • @Mammoth I would not mind doing direct deals if the Doc did not sell bullion on the site, I don't think it is right to "steal" customers from someone paying to keep the site up and running :) And I don't have any Numismatics for sale, I mentioned the NGC ms68*, but I also have a 1921 Pease PCGS MS66 and a few other "key" date Peace dollars that are conditional rarities that I bought from a GREAT dealer, who unfortunately passed on a couple of years ago, that I knew the provenance of the coins and trusted more than any other I have met over the years...he was one of the few that treated and priced everything the same whether you were another big dealer with a table or a person off of the street buying one SAE!  He is greatly missed by most in the coin biz :( I am also a sucker for nice Peace dollars...

  • @MaryB  That is what I was afraid of...seems like you are doing the best that you can with the availability! Man, aren't the mosquito's like hummingbirds when the weather gets hot?  I do admire you for being able to live outside of the city and the one thing that I would love is to have access to that many lakes since I am a sucker for good fishing EVERY time...we have quite a few man-made reservoirs but they are over run with weekend boaters, drinking and "skiing", if you can call it that.  We lose quite a few people each summer in boating accidents, due to the drunks with power boats, so it is dangerous to try and fish unless you can get away during the week :) Hang in there, pawnshops are even worse that feeBay so keep on stacking anyway you can...I still think silver is going down before it goes back up but buying weekly/monthly, etc. works better than trying to time the market, imho.

  • Mammoth you won't find dimes under $1.75 anywhere online unless you can buy huge quantities. Small stackers like myself who are happy to grab $3 face of dimes here and there pay what you have to. And I prefer USG 90% coins over generic rounds.

  • starting to get worried. Any ideas?

  • Next month is May, and we all know that saying: "Sell in May and walk away." In other words - from now until Labor day - the PM market may continue to be a real yawner. Having said that, there is always the possibility of a price-shock due to world events.

  • Look out in SW Minnesota and see how many big cities there are, I live in a town of 280 people, 2 nearest cities are 6k and 12k population. One has a "coin store" in the pawn shop. He wants $5 for a single dime. So I buy online and get what I can find cheap. And it is very rare to find dimes anywhere near spot online, very rare a dealer has any either. I do have 100 coming on the 4th of July at $1.40 each from a friend who bought a couple thousand from an estate   BTW summer here can hit 100+ degrees and 90% humidity... as hot as down there!

  • BLM sells 29 oil and gas leases in Northern NV

  • But a trial THEN an execution would scare the living bejeebers out of the rest of the traitors! I cannot disagree with you Mary, but we did have a good showing from the patriots that stood up to the BLM in person and took Bundy's cattle back! KEWL!!!

  • Government screwing the little guy, 52 ranchers forced out of business in Bundy's county. Huge area sold to the Chinese(sold OUR public land) and the tortoise area was Gold Butte, right smack where Bundy lives.  Land worth $30million sold for $4.5million. BLM director is Reids ex chief advisor, Reids son was the realtor on the land deal... it is all a bunch of crony crap and someone should put a bullet in Reids head to save us a trial

  • I am not planning on going to Minnesota anytime soon, too damn cold there...even in summer for a life long Texan :) But I will keep that in mind...like I said above, the dimes and quarters are safe but I just think there are much better deals than eBay, only kinda kidding about the $1.75 delivered but I am sure there is no selling on these forums so JK ;)  I think I previously mentioned that I am just "lucky" that I live in a large metro area with a couple of HUGE wholesalers, two refiners, and multiple large coin shops (and a few smaller ones) and shows every month, almost too many shows to be perfectly frank, because it is easy to make a move too quickly since I don't have to look and search for deals...most of time. I also agree on the mid to lower grade, common slabs...even lower grade "key" dates the more I thought about it last night, for example, I saw wayyy too many XF to lower AU 1921 Peace Dollars become available a few years ago, (even more than usual up to MS63) bu...

  • PS: Mary is purchasing in bulk and her method is VERY SAFE, and applies to most stackers here @SD. Better to pass on what a collector would consider a "good buy" for a few singly slabbed coins, when you are stacking larger amounts for SHTF. Her rationale is solid for her situation. KISS Theory Rules, Right @MaryB?

  • It is cool  that you found an AU 1949-S in your purchase though! And I do agree that the dimes and quarters are "safer" because they are too hard to produce in enough quantity, while making them good enough to pass w/o the ring test, much less with the ring test, because of the intricacies of the mint dies...they are easy enough to weather but they are hard to get looking "right" enough...on that we agree :)
