I don't know, Mary. You might be right as far as damage, but all the old 1970s surplus ammo I've tried that is corrosive was super dirty.

Yup the ammonia neutralizes the acids in the powder residue. If people are paranoid they can take it with to the range and spray down the barrel before heading home.

Did anyone ever tried purchasing stuff with precious metals?
June 18, 2013 01:58 pm -
There are two middlemen here in town that will exchange the silver for paper during normal business hours, for now...
Aside from the few mom and pop stores converting it in the back of the store, it hasn't caught on as a growing trend. But at least we have the gold and silver "stores" that will buy any and all your stuff. Progress. America will wake up someday...
Not seeing hardly any ASE roll's on eBay. Mostly 2-5 coins at a time in the auctions. Silver Lake is running dry.

Once I offered to pay an automobile mechanic with Silver Dollars but he declined.
But two weeks later, when we bumped into one another again at a gas station, he asked me if I still had the coins.
I lied and told him "No."

Windex I've never heard of it used for that. Is it the ammonia that neutralizes the corrosive elements? I heard that Simple green is a good solvent for general gun cleaning. It seemed logical in that so long as you dry the gun thoroughly, the SG stuff cleans like a whiz.

Nice hobby too, very relaxing for me to zone out casting. Then concentrating reloading but away from all electronics and interruptions. Even my phone gets turned off.

Corrosive ammo is fine, I don't know where the myth started that it instantly eats barrels. Military used it for years and you know they didn't clean guns the minute they stopped firing. I shoot corrosive surplus all the time in my Mosin, when I get home a squirt of Windex down the barrel then clean like normal.

Wombat's right about the Saiga 12, devastating fire power at close range for under $1000. Your better AR15's can run NATO 5.56 rds. That's plenty of stopping power and they are American made which I like. Ammo of all calibers is available for immediate delivery now at BulkAmmo.com

Good info was already posted so I'm just going to add a couple of notes. If you go the AK route you will often see old surplus ammo for sale. Don't ever buy anything that is noted as being corrosive. It's just not worth it. Romanian AKs are fine. All AKs are very durable and even though the Romanian ones were made with lower standards, the guns still perform with a durability much better than a typical AR15. But Russian AKs are better -- but I would stick to the non-modern Russian ones because a modern SAIGA, for example, will not take non-SAIGA magazines.
Another factor: AKs will not be as easy to get in the future whereas there's such a large manufacturing base inside the US for ARs and a larger market for ARs that when imports get tappered (sorry, couldn't resist stealing the word), you'll be glad you already have an AK.
And for close range personal defense, it's hard to beat the Saiga 12, a semi-auto (in the US) 12ga shotgun that has stick mags up to 15 rounds and 2...

Sumkid How have you been? We haven't heard you voice much lately.
I can answer your question about using real money, silver, for purchases. It is important that a person talks to a business owner or someone who has a product or service that you want to purchase and let them know your plans; that you want to buy their goods and plan to use silver. Note to them that the prices of their products equate to the valule of silver and make reference to your knowledge of silver as real money
Some people will be clueless or not want to make the trade. Others will. I made a trade for gun smithing and cleaning with a friend and traded silver for his services. There are at least 4-5 other merchants who have traded silver for their products including auto repair, martial arts, fire arms, ammo, medical services and home repair.
I have a supply of relatively low priced silver bought recently that is set up for these trades, or sales, in cases where my service provider agrees with me t...

Lots of great wepons info in here!
I have nothing to add, but fortunately I was not handcuffed but little things like FIAT.
I went the more modern route, (AR15) but regret not getting an AK or Mosin.
I guess I still can, but I am filling out my accessories and ammo counts. ;)
GOOD LUCK @SilverStacker
Time for prepping is getting SHORT, IMO

What are the reasons to buy a rifle and should someone buy guns illegally?
June 13, 2013 05:32 pm -
I was going to add that my personal belief is also that people who carry handguns anticipate being in questionable situations that may require a firearm for ones preservation. Example being your banking work, or driving a truck for a living. Both jobs have payloads that are subject to robbery. Even riskier is sleeping at truckstops, rest stops, or the side of a road. Whenever I travel interstate, I ALWAYS carry. As I mentioned before, I don't like handguns, so my Remington 870 express with 7 rounds lays across my lap, as I peacefully sleep in a rest stop or on the dark side of a gas station, even at motels. I was nearly victimized at a rest stop when I was 17 with my mom. Everyone should carry on long road trips, plenty of nut jobs out there!
I digress.... Anyhow,I work at sea and fly to work, Idon't anticipate being in a statistical mess, odds are goodI wont. IfI worked a higher risk job,I would probably carry aHAND gun.

What are the reasons to buy a rifle and should someone buy guns illegally?
June 13, 2013 11:02 am -
Copy that Shamus. The old line 'use a pistol to fight your way to your rifle is pretty true today. I am a fan of pistols due to their concealability but carry heavy weaponry close at hand. As for the ownership of a weapon that is illegal in a particular political venue, city, county, state or country, as my Sr Bob says at the CCW class. Your personal choice to see to your protection should be outside the legal considerations of owning and carrying
Example. Living in california, the average Joe found it nearly impossible to obtain a CCW. From age 18 or so, I carried my pistol, either a clunky S&W snubby 38 or when I could afford a better gun, a Taurus 9mm. It was never more than 5 feet from me if I was not carrying it on my person. The class III felony or whatever offence this rendered against me was moot. I took responsibility for my safety---and never relied on LEO or anyone else.
This firearm was handy in the truckiing driving jobs as well as banking field and pa...

What are the reasons to buy a rifle and should someone buy guns illegally?
June 13, 2013 03:00 am -
In America the only illegal weapon, is one that is stolen, imported illegally, or built/ modified to specifications that are outlawed. That being said, all semi auto rifles you can buy now are more than enough to reasonably hunt, defend, and manage reasonably in price. Full autos are expensive cause they're grandfathered in and limited in number, but when your paying for bullets you do not want to waste them. Semi auto is perfe t for well placed shots without taking your eye off the target using levee or bolt action. A rifle is all an American needs imho. It will drop an invader at 50 feet or 500 yards and do it with conviction! I see pistols as sneaky, portable...well, they're not very accurate past 100 ft. I just don't like them. I doesn't serve to bring down game well either. Rifles, practical, powerful, and respectable! " Pistols for show, Rifles for a pro."

Guns, Guns, Guns

I'm in the mosin nagant team. I had an 8 mm mauser, but the ammo was getting difficult and expensive. ( vs 7.62 ammo. The 91 30 will do 1000 yes in the right hands... He'll, I'm not that good. I score an open sight hit on the steel deer target with my mosin m-44 carbine. At 450 meters. For a non sniper man, I'm pretty satisfied with that. The 7.62 x 54R ammo is only .25 round. And will penetrate 3/4" steel. ( silver tips) it'll stop a car, truck, or I suspect a low flying chopper if placed correctly. Plus the m-44 is compact and slings over your shoulder for travel nicely. Bolt action, 5 round stripper clip fed. I agree with the ak for battle. But a good yugo, or Russian will run you 799$. New. Figure 120.00 for 800 or so rounds for either rifle, and15.00 for a sling.

Mary B knows heree stuff with the Mosin Nagant That rifle and the Mauser were the go to battle rifles in WWII and before. I bought a boatload od Golden Tiger 7-62x39 for my AK Shoots fine. Any ammo from Russia, China and other places might be somewhat dirty and require good cleaning after shooting The jury is usually out on these types of ammo as well as silver and brown Bear Russian ammo. Purist would turn their nose up at foreign ammo. Cheap ammo is not alway 'cheap' It;s just low cost because of the place of manufacture Many times there are deals on the spam cans of Tula and other 7.62 and others that is a good deal. It's sealed and good to go from the git go. I have a broad batch of mixed calibers. Usually I use better quality 223 for the M4s. They can be finicky, build up carbon quickly and sometimes have malfunctions. But for a SKS, AK, Mauser of Mosin, the cheap stuff if what 100,000,000 freedom fighters used back in the day.

Great Junk Silver Deals on EBay
June 12, 2013 01:38 pm -
I contacted this seller. He's advertising one ounce of "silver coin" not one ounce of "silver." He's being misleading but he does spell out exactly what you will receive so he's not lying. It's just up to you to calculate the weights on your own. You're right, his prices are not very good.

Been busy doing some research and I found a nice add on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jZoRECL--40
I've had the Mauser since the 70's and was my grandfathers, so I keep that.
Found a helpful site for finding ammo. Is Golden Tiger ammo any good? It's dirt cheap. http://www.gunbot.net/ammo/762x39
Is there anyone else with suggestions to what to look for? Thanks.
