Ron Paul: Secession- Are We Free To Go?

By Ron Paul:

There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents That is what our Revolutionary War was all about and today our own federal government is vastly overstepping its constitutional bounds with no signs of reform.  At what point should the people dissolve the political bands which have connected them with an increasingly tyrannical and oppressive federal government?  If people or states are not free to leave the United States as a last resort, can they really think of themselves as free?

If a people cannot secede from an oppressive government, they cannot truly be considered free.

From Paul.House.Gov:

Is all the recent talk of secession mere sour grapes over the election, or perhaps something deeper?   Currently there are active petitions in support of secession for all 50 states, with Texas taking the lead in number of signatures.  Texas has well over the number of signatures needed to generate a response from the administration, and while I wouldn’t hold my breath on Texas actually seceding, I believe these petitions raise a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union.

Is it treasonous to want to secede from the United States?  Many think the question of secession was settled by our Civil War.  On the contrary; the principles of self-governance and voluntary association are at the core of our founding.  Clearly Thomas Jefferson believed secession was proper, albeit as a last resort. Writing to William Giles in 1825, he concluded that states:

“should separate from our companions only when the sole alternatives left, are the dissolution of our Union with them, or submission to a government without limitation of powers.”

Keep in mind that the first and third paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence expressly contemplate the dissolution of a political union when the underlying government becomes tyrannical.

Do we have a “government without limitation of powers” yet?  The Federal government kept the Union together through violence and force in the Civil War, but did might really make right?

Secession is a deeply American principle.  This country was born through secession.  Some felt it was treasonous to secede from England, but those “traitors” became our country’s greatest patriots.

There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents.  That is what our Revolutionary War was all about and today our own federal government is vastly overstepping its constitutional bounds with no signs of reform.  In fact, the recent election only further entrenched the status quo.  If the possibility of secession is completely off the table there is nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties and no recourse for those who are sick and tired of it.

Consider the ballot measures that passed in Colorado and Washington state regarding marijuana laws.  The people in those states have clearly indicated that they are ready to try something different where drug policy is concerned, yet they will still face a tremendous threat from the federal government.  In California, the Feds have been arresting peaceful medical marijuana users and raiding dispensaries that state and local governments have sanctioned. This shouldn’t happen in a free country.

It remains to be seen what will happen in states that are refusing to comply with the deeply unpopular mandates of Obamacare by not setting up healthcare exchanges.  It appears the Federal government will not respect those decisions either.

In a free country, governments derive their power from the consent of the governed. When the people have very clearly withdrawn their consent for a law, the discussion should be over.  If the Feds refuse to accept that and continue to run roughshod over the people, at what point do we acknowledge that that is not freedom anymore?  At what point should the people dissolve the political bands which have connected them with an increasingly tyrannical and oppressive federal government?  And if people or states are not free to leave the United States as a last resort, can they really think of themselves as free?

If a people cannot secede from an oppressive government, they cannot truly be considered free.

  1. Ron Paul is the man.

  2. I’m ready to relocate to Texas!

    • I have lived in Texas my entire life (I’m 30) and was brought up learning about the Texas Revolution before the American Revolution in our Schools. You are born with a sense of Texan first, American 2nd and also with a sense of southern pride against an encroaching federal government.

I just wanted to preface with that… I deal a lot with the public in real estate from all over the state and I have never seen a group of people so ready to secede and go back to honest money and constitutional rule of law. Just to give you an idea… I was at a closing a few months back on a home I sold a young man. The people selling were 3 or 4 separate heirs to the family estate home and while they were printing checks and copies we got on the topic of the election and the oldest couple of the group probably in their 80′s at least responded to our talk with the following truth bomb:

“Well it really doesn’t matter who we elect because the federal reserve is destroying our country. Did you know the federal reserve isn’t even federal, it’s private, and the new world order are using the banks and central banks of the world to push us into a one world government”

I wish I had a picture of the look on all our faces. LOL

  3. It is Easy!!  Just get all your KIDZ to quit the Military!  Tell all the Cops to spend a little time Enforcing the White Collar Law. Then spray Agent Orange all over Afghanistan so who ever takes over there will have to grow something else besides Opium. Put that in your Pipe and Smoke it C/I/A

    • I think it is unfair that Afghanistan was invaded only due to opium. Opium has been used since the beginning of the Roman empire and the Roman authorities never banned opium. In my opinion, the USA deserves to be destroyed like the Roman empire for ruining billions of people’s life. A rotten country who was once great now deserves to be wiped out of the map to avoid spreading its rotten corruption.

  4. Get your laugh on

How to capture pigs without firing a shot

Step one   Place food in the wild and set up one side of a fence.
Step two    Once pigs are used to one side of the fence, set up an adjoining fence section. Put food inside fence
Step three  Once pigs are used to two sides of the fence, set up the third side, thus forming a U shape. Put food in U
Step four   Once pigs are used to three sided fence, close the fence with a fourth side.  Harvest pigs

  5. This Scotsman Is Free For Now, I Have My Land and I Stack Silver. Lol  But That Is Certainly Going To Change I Believe.

  6. ^FREEDOM!!!!

  7. Keep fighting for your rights and freedoms as they will be taken away if you don’t. Succession is the only way forward, keep fighting for it.

  8. Being born in Texas and living here all of my life, I am for leaving the United States Government!
Texas can be totally self sufficent. We can collect our own income taxes and support the entire
economy of our state. Washington D.C. and what it stands for now has run out of “Get out of Jail

Proud to be Ranger from Texas! YEE HAAA!

    • Texans settle down.  Why don’t you instead start with throwing the TSA out of your airports?  You almost did it last year until Rick Perry sold you all out.  Then nullify ObamaCare and any other unconstitutional federal action.  Take the lead.  The problem isn’t the Union of States.  The problem is an out of control federal government, that needs to be reigned in.

    • We Texans are a proud group, let us war dance a little. Right now legislation has been introduced for 2013 Tx Congress by Rep. Patrick of Longview that would make any touching of the genitals or private areas illegal and it would also make it illegal for the TSA to remove a minor away from their parents for questioning or further searches.  Also, another piece of legislation from a representative in the San Antonio area would nullify the NDAA.

I’m really big on the idea of Texas becoming it’s own nation again for several reasons… mostly we are one of the few states that could actually do it and succeed. Our Economy makes up 20% of entire US exports, We are the worlds 13th largest economy, We have our own independent power grid, 95% of the other states oil & gas pipelines originate in Tx, Tx has created more jobs in 10 years than the other 49 states COMBINED, we have ports and international airports, Tx has the most fortune 500 companies within our borders than any other state, we have one of the most decorated military histories and one of the best possible men to lead us Ron Paul.

That being said, secession in our current environment will never work. Texas can only dream of becoming its own country again once we have defeated the banksters and over reaching federal government. Until then I honestly don’t think anyone that reads this site wants to live in a Texas with Rick Perry, John Corynyn, Jeb Hensarling or Kay Bailey Hutchinson as some of its leading members of government. Only if we had Ron Paul…

    • It’s nice to hear that, Orion and I hope that this legislation would pass before summer 2013. Because I’ll be visiting the USA during that period and I am really worried about the TSA “molesters” doing wrong stuff to me. If the TSA asks questions to me about my gold and silver, I won’t tell them the truth about them.

  9. Speaking of freedom! I saw this story this morning and didn’t have time to present it here. But what stood out to me was the fed is  holding without bail three guys for being terrorist in California. They did not do anything but talked about there desire to be jehad’s and were planing on moving to Afganistan to join up. They didn’t have a planed out attack or supplied any weapons as to cary out any attack here. From what I gathered from the story is they just talked about it and started selling there things to move over sees.

Im not saying there feelings or views are right and maybe there is more to the story. But what happened to our freedom of speech?

Please take a look at the article and there is many more on this story if you google it

  10. I guess I’m going to catch heck from TPTB

  11. Said this a few months back, here or on Keiser: Secession will be the word of 2014. Not just in The USA. The IMF’s gonna love all those microstates so be very weary… never invite a vampire in LOL

  12. How great will it be when the federal govt is shrunk down to its proper size: almost nothing?

None of the states need the Feds.    Imagine how much more money everyone will have when the Federal govt doesn’t assrape you and take all your money all year long and every time somebody in your family dies, your family loses 55%.   UNACCEPTABLE!!!!     The Federal govts proper size is small enough to drag it into the bathtub and drown it.   Go States!

As for drug policy, the solution is simple – JURY NULLIFICATION.     I would love to draw jury duty and deliver a not guilty verdict for anyone and everyone who has been charged with a crime for which THERE IS NO VICTIM.    This seems like common sense.

I’d like to see this secession movement get much bigger.     PEOPLE SHOULD GET ORGANIZED AND STOP PAYING FEDERAL TAXES EN MASSE.     People need to start doing things that will make a difference, like refusing to pay taxes to an immoral, thieving, lying, cheating, murdering tyrannical govt!

    • The Federals are used to take control over the middle and the poor classes and they receive orders from the rich class. We are the ones who are paying the taxes so we decide how the taxes are going to be spent. No taxation without representation!

  13. I’m not of the drown-in-a bathtub persuasion, but just realize an estimated 70% of every sale harks back to paying intrest. Ultimately on private and gov debt. Most is collected by taxes no doubt but its also in retail and service margins.
But there’s the double knot…  intrest is supposed to be the price of money. Well, that depends on who creates it. Intrest should be the price on a loan, yes, but not the price of issuing currency. But obviously these two are mixed up stacking the deck. So it’s not just the gov who got you into this mess (certainly NOT representing you!) it’s also the corps who are in bed with them.
Now who rules over whom? Well, IMHO the politicians are *not* really in power. They serve interests. Many of the so-called gov *are* private entities, the FED being the sore thumb that sticks out, but it’s all over. It’s the ugly ppl behind the curtain. Please ppl, never forget that. Otherwise you can restart, rearrange, renegotiate, rephrase, reinvent, re-whatever, but after a decade your fully spun into their web again.

  14. Nice sporran you got there Marchas 45  Where your dirks.  My dad wore a kilt at formal affairs.  The kilt and full regalia is an elegant uniform for the Scots and Irish

  15. I don’t care if I am a bad citizen from the point of view of the laws that doesn’t protect my rights, liberties and freedoms like it used to. Those types of laws are bad! Trusting a government that keeps destroying my finances, my liberties, my freedoms, my privacy and my prosperity? Yeah right!
