Researchers in Finland have reportedly developed a next-generation solar panel utilizing silver nano particle antennas to trap incoming solar light.  The silver nano-antennas reportedly drastically increase photovoltaic cell efficiency (the percentage of incoming solar light converted into electrical energy- approximately only 20% in current solar panels), and new fabrication techniques allow printing the silver nano-antenna at a low cost.

Jeffery Christian and the CPM Group’s dire predictions notwithstanding, it appears silver’s industrial demand won’t be decreasing anytime soon.

From ABC.net.au:

Light-trapping, silver nano-antennas could dramatically improve the performance of solar panels by catching more light, according to a new study.

A team of physicists, including Professor Constantin Simovski from Finland’s Aalto University, has developed theoretical designs that could increase photovoltaic cell efficiency in a commercially viable way.

It proposes incorporating chessboard-patterned arrays of tiny silver nano-antennas into solar panels.

This would trap more incoming light, allowing it to be preferentially re-radiated through the photovoltaic slab, improving efficiency.

New fabrication techniques for printing a nano-antenna array on thin film means it could be done at low cost.

“Pieces of the film with printed nano-antenna arrays can be prepared separately from solar cells so that the price of every piece will be small,” report the researchers on the pre-press website ArXiv.org.

“We have demonstrated our nano-antenna arrays operate significantly better than the structures based on anti-reflecting coatings.”

Existing technology uses coatings to reduce the amount of light reflected off the solar cell, but this fails to prevent up to half of the light passing through the back of the solar cell’s thin film and being lost.

    • It might be.  I was hoping to see a percentage figure for how much better these new solar cells are than the old ones but nothing was stated here on that.  Old ones are up to 20% percent efficient, they say, but no word on how much better these micro-array cells are.  Of course, even if they had the same efficiency but were cheaper, that would be good too.

  1. Yea that would be great RocketsRedGlare but I see a lot of folks waking up to find their Solar Panels gone during the night. Copper is having the same outcome with the thieves out in force and when those prices go up there’s going to be an epidemic as these metals go through the roof. Keep your gun handy. Lol

Sorry about yesterday buddy it wasn’t you I’ve stress at work up to my eyeballs getting tax season done and deals falling apart because of incompetent surveyors and things at home with the wife and kid have been stressful for multiple reasons. So from brother to brother I just want to apologize if I came across as brash. We shouldn’t fight like that, the enemy are the bankers and the corruption that is robbing us literally and of our freedoms. Hope you accept my apology as I think very highly of your opinions and always look into any links you post.

  3. Not a problem Brother I have the same situations with closings myself, the Banksters are the Culprits and the Buyers are good but the Banksters keep putting the Closings off. Gets me frustrated.
Apology not needed Brother take care and make that wife and kid happy as they are more important than anything else,

    • “…and make that wife and kid happy as they are more important than anything else.”

Agree 100%, Charlie.  In a world made of zinc, family is gold.  :-)

  4. Absolutely. They always come first. Me and my wife have decided this will be the 8 year old’s last year in Public School. WE have to correct his english teachers notes…. Does that make any sense to anyone? It’s scary to us that these people are “teaching” our young and we all know the public schools are liberal, collectivist breeding grounds.

Just the other day they were learning about the constitution and inside his homework it said “The bill of rights are granted to us by the government” My blood pressure at that point would need to be measure in lightyears, I told my son the bill of rights are rights we are born with that our creator gave us, the government cannot grant or take away those rights.

    • @JLee2027
If I had kept the homework sheet with those words on it to scan and send to drudgereport I might. Drudge would ignore it though.

I did however call the school and in a nice and calm manner explained to them how the bill of rights work and why they were set up and how the schools curriculum is completely false. She couldn’t understand why I seemed so concerned about it and that’s when I had to explain to her that a persons failure to understand their rights leads to the holocaust, stalinist russia, mao’s china and the tyranny we are starting to see at home.

All of which probably sailed right over her head.  Yeah.  Been there, seen that, and was completely underwhelmed.  If you want to see a real deer-in-the-headlights moment, ask a young teacher to discuss the Federalist Papers sometime.  9 out of 10 of them have no idea what you are talking about while the tenth one will have heard of them but not know them in any meaningful way.  But they sure do know how to put a condom on a cucumber!

    • @Orion.  You and you wife are absolutely on the right path.  No one, and I mean no one, will care more about your child’s education than you.  In the 80s and 90s my wife and I home-educated our sons all the way through high school.  And don’t let the socialization issue worry you; there are so many solutions.  And I have always said that when children become adults, they will not be spending all their time solely with their age group (the blind leading the blind concept).  Anyway, I could go on and on, but I heartily encourage you and your wife in your endeavors.  Oh, and re: you and @marchas45, I am personally encouraged at the wisdom you both demonstrated in whatever the interaction was.  Truly wise to remember to keep the focus on the real foe.

Indeed.  There be adults here!  Unlike in DC.
