Suppose the prophets are right, and the central banks crash, taking down the major economies of the world. And if that should happen, just imagine the anarchy and chaos – empty store shelves, rioting, looting, killing and raping. Where have you decided is the place safest for you?
I’m trying like crazy to get myself a job in a Central American country – where it should be relatively safe to watch the great societies melt down from a safe distance. I’ve been thinking Panama. But now I’m more inclined to go to Belize.
I’m thinking that along the coast where the temperatures are mild year round, in a tropical climate where fresh fruit and vegetables are grown year round. Where there’s no need to heat nor cool a house. Where fresh fish are abundant whenever you’re hungry. Where you can dress and act like a poor Gringo, looking like you own nothing of value - attracting zero interest of thieves. If only I can get that job before the bottom falls out here in the States…

I’m thinking that the closer you get to either the north or south poles, the colder winters get. And to keep from freezing to death could require a huge investment of time, effort and imagination. The big northern cities are screwed when winter comes, during times of anarchy and chaos. Detroit, Chicago, NYC, and many others will get really, really ugly.
If you have a private source of heat – like living underground, geothermal vents, plenty of your own coal or firewood, etc. you might make it.
We had a 20′ connex (shipping container) and insulated it with that 2″ foam board insulation, (blue). It was well heated with a single 1500w space heater! It was also above ground. Mary’s setup would be even better. A 40′ connex is more common, usually about the same price, but you might need 2 heaters. We always leave the heavy steel doors on them, but build a wooden frame door and wall behind that. The steel doors can be closed from the inside with a little ingenuity! ;) I devised a weighted pulley system that worked rather well.
You can likely purchase a 40 footer for under $2000, maybe even with delivery.
My younger brother had a good friend several years back, who lived in an abandoned gold mine in the mountains just west of Boulder, Colorado. No heating nor cooling required year round. But the view really sucked. I never asked, but I assume such a home would make a great place to grow your own mushrooms.
About 15 years ago, I listed a large parcel of ranch land east of Denver that included a couple of underground Titan Missile silos. The government pulled the rockets and equipment, and sold the land to some investors in Michigan, who finally decided to sell the entire 13,000 acres wholesale. Some people have done okay with turning a missile silo into a subterrainian home.
Me – I prefer sunshine, silky sand, ocean water and soft breezes coming in off the sea.
I was born and grew up in Colorado. I’ve shoveled more snow than lots of people have even seen. But I’m getting older by the day, and I’m now at the age where my metabolism has slowed so much that I just don’t make a lot of body heat. Cold weather sucks, man.
In trying to imagine a Mad-Max world post-TSHTF, I can visualize a world of anarchy with looters and criminals killing, raping and plundering at will. Meanwhile, there will be a hardcore group of government types desperate to hold on to power, using drones and cops/military to take out any groups that appear to be a threat. In such a world of countless drones overhead, maybe avoiding groups will be a smart thing to do.
Entire town I live in is ready to go it as a group with a few exceptions living in the section 8 USDA apartments. They will be told to pack their crap and get out. Medium sized group is best for defense, scattering of skills among many so a loss of 1 person doesn’t take the entire group down etc.

" Move away from the standard AR-15 ball rounds and move into soft point or ballistic tip and bump it to 60-70 grains. Penetration improves and tip makes expansion pretty drastic. Vmax rounds literally explode and the fragments will create a 5 inch diameter wound channel "Reply To: Real world firearms suggestions
